Biography

Growing up in New Mexico, I was exposed to a spectrum of rich artistic traditions and I decided early on that Art would be central in my life. I became involved in the production of furniture while I was getting my Bachelors of Fine Arts at the University of New Mexico. At that time, the Spanish colonial furniture of Santa Fe and Taos was becoming very popular and there was lots of work to be found in the woodshops. My interest in the aesthetic of blocky lines and heavy weight began in those woodshops and it persists to this day.

While in graduate school at the University of Arizona my paintings and drawings started to become more influenced by my life experiences, more personal in content. This practice continues through to the present. The paintings, prints and drawings aren’t always executed in exactly the same style but the content is at least loosely based on my own life. As such, the current work is dominated by scenes of domestic life, family dynamics and little girls.

The latest woodblock prints are entirely dedicated to little girls. It was these woodblocks that led to the combining of the furniture and the   etched blocks resulting in furniture with etched panels. The panels are painted and then the raised images are rolled out with a brayer in same way a woodblock is inked-up.

Currently, I am a High School Art teacher. My wife is a Professor of Anthropology and we have two great daughters, one four years old and one six years old.
